On Sunday, October 8, 2023, the pioneering scientific research center, CERN, located in Geneva, is set to unveil its cutting-edge hub for science education and outreach, aptly named the “CERN Science Gateway.”
This eagerly awaited initiative aims to ignite the curiosity of young minds about the science that underpins the world they inhabit while fostering learning and education through interactive exhibits and innovative teaching methods.
Designed to cater to individuals aged five and older, the CERN Science Gateway has been meticulously developed to showcase the various career possibilities within scientific research, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of scientists. This visionary project extends an open invitation to people of all ages and backgrounds to delve into the realm of science and technology that CERN, one of the world’s largest and most respected scientific research centers, delves into.
Within this new center, visitors will encounter laboratories where they are encouraged to actively engage in learning, guided by the esteemed scientific community at CERN. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to embark on a journey through the cosmos with the “Our Universe” exhibition or explore the intriguing fusion of physics and art in “Exploring the Unknown.” These exhibits provide ample opportunities for a deeper dive into the captivating world of scientific exploration.
The CERN Science Gateway’s forward-looking vision is beautifully mirrored in its sustainable home, a building boasting a net-zero carbon footprint. This remarkable feat is achieved through the installation of 2000 square meters of solar panels adorning the structure and a surrounding forest of 400 trees. Designed by the renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in collaboration with associate architects from Brodback-Roulet, the complex comprises five exhibition spaces, a 900-seat auditorium, numerous laboratories, a gift shop, and a restaurant for guests to enjoy. The architectural structure, characterized by metal and glass elements, evokes the spirit of CERN’s primary site, featuring tunnel-like spaces and a six-meter-high bridge connecting the buildings.
Established in 1954, CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, stands as a global hub for groundbreaking particle research and is notably the birthplace of the World Wide Web. Already collaborating with 600 institutions and universities worldwide, the introduction of the CERN Science Gateway underscores CERN’s unwavering dedication to education and its commitment to shaping the future of scientific research by igniting the passion of the next generation.
