As the holiday season approaches and an El Nino weather pattern extends its dry season, Christmas Island is preparing for an extraordinary natural event – the annual red crab migration in time for Christmas. Last year, this remarkable migration occurred in October, but in 2023, it’s expected to create a mesmerizing red spectacle perfectly aligned with the festive spirit of December.

The Christmas Island red crab migration, featuring tens of millions of these unique crustaceans, is celebrated as a natural wonder. Renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough, known for his wildlife documentaries, has hailed it as one of the highlights of his career. This event is captured in the Netflix series “Our Planet II.”

Chris Bray, the owner of Swell Lodge, an all-inclusive luxury eco-retreat on Christmas Island, describes it as “an unbelievable sight as millions of surprisingly large land crabs embark on an incredible migration, covering the island in a vibrant red hue.” Christmas Island is the only place on the planet where this species, the Gecarcoidea natalis, exists.

Nestled in the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Its lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and incredible underwater experiences make it a dream destination. Visitors can explore unique ecosystems, dive into crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, and witness the red crab migration.

Christmas Island offers guided tours led by expert guides, providing insights into the behavior of these remarkable creatures. Lisa Preston, owner of Indian Ocean Experiences, which offers tours and packages, explains that the timing of the migration is uncertain, but the tours offer local knowledge and the opportunity to participate in crab raking to clear the way for vehicles.

The island is also renowned for world-class diving with healthy coral reefs, and divers often encounter whale sharks and oceanic manta rays along the coastline. David Watchorn from Extra Divers Australia, a marine operator, emphasizes the island’s rich marine biodiversity and excellent diving conditions.

Christmas Island is a destination for nature-inspired getaways. Its diverse flora and fauna, pristine beaches, and lush rainforests offer endless adventures. The famous red crabs can be seen year-round, and there is a chance to witness their babies returning from the sea.

Sarah Coote, Destination Marketing Manager at Christmas Island Tourism Association, invites the world to experience the island’s natural beauty and wonders. Christmas Island promises an unforgettable and unique adventure for travelers seeking an extraordinary Christmas.
